“A story of love is encapsulated like a seed in a story of loss and then blooms on Judith Stitzel’s pages, accompanied by Claudia Giannini’s gorgeous images. ‘Grief requires its own syntax and vocabulary,’ Judith tells us in this chronicle of the first year after her husband’s death, and then proceeds to learn the language like a native. She rejects the clichés
customarily offered to and by the bereaved, instead gleaning her own complicated, honest, and resilient art.”

- Natasha Sajé, author of Bend

“Without being overly (and therefore unbelievably) encouraging, Field Notes from Grief affirms the reader through humor,
honesty and attention to the emotional contradictions of loss. Different people need different things when they are grieving. But, as much as anything else, they need evidence that they will once again want to go on.”

- Stephanie Savitch, MS, LPC

Field Notes From Grief The First Year eBook Judith Stitzel

Judith Gold Stitzel is a revered teacher and writer, retired from West Virginia University, whose graudate seminar in literary criticism was the most important class I ever took in my Master's Degree program. "Field Notes from Grief: The First Year" is taken from the journals that Judith kept during the first year after her beloved husband Bob's death. It is an incredibly beautiful, moving meditation on being alone -- on the loss of "twoness" -- after the death of a spouse. The grief that Judith explores becomes heartbreakingly palpable -- she gives full-throated voice to the baffling, exhausting, scary combination of anger, absence, and routine of grieving. "Some day," she writes," I will inhabit a world where Bob's absence no longer pulls at my heart and wholeness. Today, that admission carries grief in its arms." And yet, in grief there is humor, too. Visiting an exhibit of the cartoonist/author William Steig's life and work, she notes a caption in a display case: "He was a tragicomic artist,... You have to feel both the truth and the grief of the truth and find a way to present them with redeeming delight." And that is exactly what Judith has done with "Field Notes" - she has woven the truth of her grief, her truth, into a beautifully realized, redeeming work of art. "Field Notes from Grief" is one of the most moving books you will ever read.

Field Notes From Grief The First Year eBook Judith Stitzel Reviews

This book very accurately describes for me the first year after having lost a life's partner. It is amazing to me how similar our experiences were and yet they were uniquely different.
Was touched by the story and the way she presented it!
This book helped me to process the passing of my father. The author's accounts of losing her husband, in real time, offered me a strategy for dealing with my grief.
A well written chronicle of a woman's experience with her husband's end-life experiences. Moving, thoughtful, heart-felt sharing of her grieving process. A kind of menotring experience for me, though my husband is helathy at the moment. i chose this, first of all as recommended by a friend and secondly as a sort of preparation for a time in future when I could have need of this reflection.
Judith Stitzel was my college professor for Women's Studies, and I enjoyed her book as much as I enjoyed her class. I loved the illustrations! I have long held the opinion that illustrations shouldn't just be in children's books. I enjoyed so much the descriptions of her yard and garden. I felt like I was right there with Dr. Stitzel.
Judith Stitzel's recounting of the year after her beloved husband died is beautifully written. The only thing wrong with a good marriage, is that one goes first, leaving the other to mourn and remember. Reminds me of "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking," which shows that long lived pairs, even in the bird world, suffer long lasting grief. Why does it seem that women mourn harder than widowers do? I got more from this book than from C.S. Lewis' book, which the author mentions.

I met Bob & Judith 45 years ago, I was a small child at the time. The Two became a huge part of my life, for Judith is a remarkable, beautiful, dear friend of mine. Through the years growing up, I watched their marriage grow into a beautiful relationship as they became One. (It was always Bob & Judith)
I was full of sadness & grief when I learned of Bob's death. I found myself grieving for the loss of such a great person, Yet I felt so confused & concerned, How will Judith deal with this huge loss, and now being alone?
In her book, she has taken such a sad & grieving time & turned it in a great memoir for other people to read and learn from her experience in losing her Bob.
The book and pictures are very well combined together, as they are a reflection of the life & love the two shared as husband & wife.
In dealing with my own family grief, the book as helped me move forward in life, learning that the grieving process is normal, You are Alive, You will Survive, You have to move Forward.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is faced with grieving the loss of a dear loved one.
